In Amsterdam, 43% of employees cycle to work. This is of course facilitated by the infrastructure - the Dutch capital boasts more than 500 km of cycle paths and very good traffic lights. Close behind is the Danish city of Copenhagen, where 37% of all employees pedal to work every day. Equally cycle-friendly cities are Utrecht (Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium) or Malmö (Sweden).
Daily pedalling not only saves a lot on fuel, but is also extremely beneficial for health and the environment. Three hours a week spent on a bike reduces the risk of a heart attack by 50%! With the right preparation, it is possible to cycle to work in rain, heat or even in winter.

In Norway, it is even possible to ride uphill without pedalling....

It only takes one creative, tired cyclist to come up with a brilliant idea. His name is Jarle Wanvik and he is the designer of the only bicycle lift in the world, which is located in Trondheim, Norway. Wanvik was fed up with the fact that when he commuted to work by bike every day, he was already sweaty and tired after climbing the first hill. So he invented and constructed a kerb-mounted lift that takes cyclists to the top. All you have to do is activate the mechanism with your right foot, slide your foot onto the support (your left foot still rests on the pedal) and let yourself be pulled by the conveyor belt installed along the pavement all the way to the top.

The lift was opened in 1993, is still in operation today and is not only an invaluable aid to local residents, but also a tourist attraction. Its use is free, for everyone!
